Plum Blossoms Do Not Give Away Their Scent, Despite the Coldness of Life
[By Seo Young-ju (Art Science, Curator)]

The blue sky turns into grey…. Shining sunlight turns into darkness….
It was a rainy day when everything changed like ink spreading and soaking into Korean paper. Thunder crashed like the explosive sounds emitted from a fighter plane or the claps of lighting and thunder that split the world in half, as if they were about to turn all existence into ashes.
A wanderer rambles along losing his way in a murky street where the traces of warfare seem to be everywhere. After wandering for a while with no umbrella, being suppressed by the heaviness of the cold raindrops soaking into his clothes and despite his blurry sight, in an instant, this wanderer focuses his eyes on an exhibition hall around the corner that is silently lit.
‘Ask Where to Go’
This phrase from the poster pasted on the entrance of the exhibit is like a ray of light met on the edge of the world. He enters the exhibition hall as if being drawn in by a magnet. Unconsciously lured to the hall, there is a plum blossom painting done on Korean paper. However, the peaceful plum blossom is surrounded by fighter planes and lethal weapons of mass destruction, not by beautiful butterflies, along with the caption ‘Plum Blossoms Do Not Give Away Their Scent, Despite the Coldness of Life.’ written under the painting. It was painted by Seong Tae-hun. The painting that captures the wanderer delivers a symbolic message about plum blossoms that never surrender in the face of the array of hardships and adversities painted on the empty Korean paper.

The Republic of Korea is the last divided country among the 200 countries on earth with the scar of warfare from endless invasions by other nations strewn across its heart. Seong, leading a career as a struggling artist, has made an attempt to combine historical narrative with emotional resonance by looking back on past history. In addition to this, after experiencing shock and terror watching his daughter witness footage of 9/11 as a kind of amusing game, Seong started to make work about our daily livelihood and everyday psychological uneasiness. His recent works reveal imagery of fear and insecurity in understated Korean paintings of the Four Gracious Plants and other various types of vegetation seen around us using fighter planes as symbols of threat and fear. Seong struggles with how these threats can be dealt with beyond the metaphorical depiction of current situations devastated with terror, violence and warfare. Therefore, Seong’s canvases contain the marks of gruesomeness.

Ink spreads into the empty universe along with the shapes of running brushstrokes delicately drawn. Grey dots and diagonal shapes symbolize an intense rainstorm or snowstorm of a fierce winter and the snow-white Korean paper turns into a corrupt, tainted world, where threatening fighters are about to launch exploding bombs. Seong has brought an extreme level of tension to the usually calm and serene Korean painting. However, here, the plum blossoms flower gradually in the midst of the darkness of a canvas which has seemingly lost all hope. An energy that outgrows concerns and distress helps the buds of each branch open with all their power.

The current situation of the world, being constantly exposed to the threats of terror, violence and warfare, does not allow the people of Korea, who are surrounded by the possibility of the confrontational warfare, to enjoy the true meaning of peace in their daily lives. In addition to this, the plum blossoms, acting as the persona of the artist, the numerous dots and lines reminding us of snow storms, and the images of threatening fighter planes together maximize the drama of the situation.
The artist, however, wants to emphasize the integrity of the gracious flower, which does not succumb to rain, snow, or extreme coldness, and he suggests that the strength of the flower should remind us of the spirit that our ancestors maintained during the crisis times in our country’s past. He uses this as a metaphor to express the attitude that we should live with in this era filled with violence.

ee Yuk-sa, a well-known poet during the Japanese occupation, rebelled against the Japanese colonization without fear of death, expressing his confidence and faith in the emancipation of our country in spite of the desperate reality of the situation. Lee never threw his hope away and kept planting the seeds of his poverty-stricken verses. And the grasses sprouted from these seeds may have allowed us to lead our current lives. The following is from Gwang ya by Lee Yuk-sa:

Snow falls
Among the lonely scent of plum blossoms,
As I plant the seeds for these poverty-stricken verses

There will no doubt be more fear and threats facing us like the flashing blade or rumbles of a thunderbolt, but the plum blossoms in Seong Tae-hun’s work will remain as the herald of spring in the midst of our extremely gruesome world.
