Between real scenery and history, between imagination and reality

Historical Sites-Coexistence

One year and one month have already elapsed. Reflecting on what happened, it's unbelievable that it happened only a year ago. Perhaps it is because of the World Cup fever in the summer of 2002, so the shock of September last year feels like an event that occurred a long time ago. While other trivial events seem vivid as if they happened a few days ago, even after several years, what makes the September 11 attacks (9/11 attacks) feel like a particularly old past? Is it because the 9/11 attacks have already been settled as an immortal historical image, while we watch the countlessly repeated scenes on TV? Or is it simply because we have become insensitive to bedlam due to major collapse accidents such as Wau Apartment building, Sampoong Department Store, Seongsu Bridge, and the gas explosion in Ahyeon-dong, even though they were not produced by terrorism? The same way there are many words referring to Gwangju in May 1980, such as terrorism, incident, uprising, battle, disaster, disturbance, riot, massacre, revolution, movement, event, etc., the terms that refer to New York in September 2001 also differ depending on each one’s the worldview and political views. However, the clear lesson learned from the 9/11 attacks is that the “the USA,” which is believed to rule the world, is no longer “a beautiful country.” In this regard, the voices of self-reflection can be heard louder within the United States than outside the country. In the first year of the 21st century, when skyscrapers collapsed in dust, this incident clearly warned us that America’s cruel method of domination of the world in the 20th century would no longer be effective from the 21st century onward.

On the one hand, 9/11 attacks will be remembered as the most economical and artistic form of terrorism in the human history. It was because that was executed by a method beyond imagination, and an impossible operation was conducted like a movie where a terrorism against the USA was done using the American resources. In addition, a strange fear entails the 9/11 attacks making it challenging to think of the pain and sorrow of the victims. In other words, the bewilderment of an unimaginable surprise attack that overshadows humanistic views startled people over the globe, who had been excited about the new 21st century, regardless of their liking for the USA. At the same time, wise people had an opportunity to reflect on the savage life of the 20th century.

The exhibition of Seong Taehun held a little after the 9/11 attacks is entitled Historical sites-Coexistence. Before this, he had already shown lyrical real scenery through his first solo exhibition Real scenes of the historical sites, based on his visits to the sites of the Donghak Peasant Revolution such as Baedeulpyeongya, Manseokbo, Baeksan, Hwangtohyeon, Ugeumchi, and Gomnaru, as well as the places of Gwangju Democratization Movement such as the Gwangju Provincial Office where he himself had visited. Afterward, in his second solo exhibition in 2000, A journey to historical sites of the exile, he captured the images and impression of the places of the exile on canvas such as Gangjin, Sinjido, and Heuksando, after having visited the sites. In both of his solo exhibitions, he adopts the method of real landscape painting based on the personal field trips or journeys. However, this third solo exhibition Historical sites-Coexistence presents a great difference from previous works. First, although Seong Taehun did not visit the United States for this exhibition, he is paying attention to the past, which is too recent to be called the most modern history of the 9/11 attacks. This is because, in fact, 9/11 attacks are still a vivid event that would be more natural to call it “a current topical issue” rather than a history that had been already solidified or completed.

In this sense, Seong Taehun must have abandoned the real scenery and history to which he was sticking in his previous canvases. Nevertheless, compared to his previous exhibitions, what becomes stronger over time is the very life itself of the artist. While both real scenery and history were to guarantee a certain amount of objectivity, Historical sites-Coexistence puts emphasis on subjectivity. The past paintings are composed of books and stories that are not based on direct experiences. Therefore, he was required to take the real scenery while vaguely inferring (guessing) the emotions of the time. Contrariwise, in Historical sites-Coexistence, although he did not witness the terrorism in person in the United States, he accepts the information delivered vividly in real time and depicts the emotions perceivable from the field. Of course, he accepts the imaginary text called mass communication, which is not direct, but what matters is that there is a difference in the clarity of emotions that Seong Taehun feels in real time. This maybe the reason for which a very pure and innocent child appears on the canvas against the backdrop of Manhattan in ruin. This little girl is Yoonseo, the daughter of Seong Taehun. He tried to capture the strange feelings he experienced while watching the repeated terror scene on TV with Yoonseo and his family when 9/11 attacks occurred.

With this in mind, we can read his thoughts that travel between real scenery and history, between imagination and reality in Historical sites-Coexistence. Previously, I mentioned that Seong Taehun must have abandoned the real landscape and history. However, making a closer approach once again, this may not be the case. It is because the burden of having to distinguish the boundary that is ambiguous and extremely clear for us as much as the difference between historical fact and reality makes it impossible to neglect history and real scenery. If it is a history that has already hardened like fossils, the historical fact and the truth may be different. However, if it is an ongoing history, the distinction becomes highly burdensome. For this reason, imagination and reality permeated his burdensome canvas. Meticulously speaking, “truth and reality” are as dissimilar as “truth and historical fact.” In my opinion, the ability to distinguish between the two is the very imagination. With the power of this imagination, Seong Taehun expressed an empty and fragile bird cage drawn on canvas against the backdrop of grayish dust spreading all over by the terrorism. ◈
