Pondering Modern Culture through Plum Blossoms

:Poignant Scent of Satire and Wit
[By Jang Dong-gwang (Independent Curator, Art Criti]

Seong Tae-hun spends his day as busy as possible like any other day. His daily demands, which are simple and strict as usual, begin in his studio located in a building in Yangpyeong-dong. Seong, as a truly versatile and prolific artist, draws our attention to his adjustable approach in terms of formal expression, which is probably due to his restless pursuit toward diversified topics throughout his painting history. In addition, his distinctive perspective on our history plays a role as the cornerstone of his painting. Spending his school days in Gwang-ju, a shrine for the 5 /18 democratization struggle, his historical attitude is obviously rooted in firsthand experiences. Due to his background growing up in the artsy town, the plum blossoms in aged trees deliver the deep breaths of painters from the Joseon dynasty who were deeply mesmerized by the red and white plum blossoms. Although sometimes the abstract brushstrokes can be seen as homage to the classics, Seong skillfully juxtaposes critical sarcasm toward society within his canvas that revels in a sense of humor. The Janus-like dual aspects serve as an index for understanding Seong’s artistry. It is noteworthy that Seong takes quite a distinctive structure by harmonizing the modern landscape with traditional brushstrokes of black and white ink painting in which Seong usually takes plum blossoms, one of four gracious plants(四君子), as his main subject. His unconventional approach is rooted in the following elements.

First, the plum blossoms are painted greenish unlike the traditional colors of white or red. The unrealistic plum blossoms are the result of his perceptional imagination. How come plum blossoms are typically only white or red? Can’t green plum blossoms exist? This outrageous question reflects Seong’s sarcastic attitude and unconventional way of thinking. Seong must have dreamt of an ideal flower in the world replete with contradiction and absurdity. Those visual imaginings could be a restoration of either Eastern Arcadia or a lost paradise. It has been a long time since painting is not committed to representing reality. Reassuring that painting is far from realistic depiction, it is highly significant that Seong’s work suggests an unrealistic vista of irrational dreams.

In that context, Seong includes a second set of irregular elements. Among them are flying roosters and chickens and hawks with helicopters in their faces. The ridiculous scenes of flying roosters with wings with degraded function evoke paradoxical cues that are usual in black comedy. Roosters are inherently considered one of the sacred and auspicious animals among the 12 Chinese zodiacs. In their fight against evil, they signify hope and a new beginning by crowing at the break of dawn. In addition, the ecological trait of having a crest is associated with rising to high prominence and living in honor and wealth. In conjunction with the inherent significance of roosters, plum blossoms play the role as a herald of spring in the midst of a horrible chill, thus evoking virtues such as integrity, aspiration, and anticipation. This is where Seong tries to combine the modern with the traditional. Based on Eastern Painting theory, Seong’s latest works can be categorized into Hwa Jo-hwa (painting with subjects like flowers and birds). His plum blossom paintings are faithful to the traditional technique due to Mol Gol-beop (painting with ink or colors in a brushstroke with no outline). The principal five rules are abided by in the depiction of certain aspects of plum blossoms such as the intertwined roots, queer main trunks, trimmed branches, sturdy stalks, and mysteriously wonderful flowers. Seong’s painting is noticeable when it comes to the Gol-gi (powerful brushstrokes resembling a stout skeletal frame) because of the symbolical significance given to plum blossoms. Zhang Yenyuan's 張彦遠 LIDAI MINGHUAJI ?代名?記 or "The Record of Famous Painters” at the end of Tang period states that Gol-gi refers to the combination of the spirit with the refinement of the brush and is expressed through the use of the brush, in contrast to Hyeong-sa meaning exterior representation. Gol-gi deals with how an artist reveals the mentality immanent in a subject, as in Sa-eoi (寫意, placing more emphasis on the spirit rather than the form) or Eoi-kyeong (意境). Seong employs two ways of using brushes, rough brushstrokes for the depiction of plum blossoms focusing on integrity and fine brushes for birds, chickens, and hawks. These contrasting methods exude an unusual tension on the canvas.

The third irregular element can be found here. Seong etches the contemporary landscape ruined by a myriad of disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and warfare onto canvases colored with yellow, turquoise, pink, and green. The encounter with a variety of figures such as green-petaled flowers, roosters in the air, chickens, and helicopter-faced hawks creates a dramatic scene, which implores us to find all kinds of feelings ranging from pleasure to fury, grief to enjoyment. Uncomfortable as it might be, it suggests a marriage between the sorrowful and the antiquated, yet venerable, as if it were the lucid luminosity from the moon reflected on a river. Seong sticks to his distinct perspective by seeking contemporary visual language in the traditional ink painting. The result is unwaveringly rooted in a critical outlook in regards to society, along with an exploratory path in form. What significance does this distinctive perspective carry? It is like a dream in pursuit of a lost paradise, a critical perception toward the cruel history of modern culture becoming devoid of humanity, and a contemplative perspective on a society impoverished with terror and a severe gap between the poor and the rich.
Seong translates this contradictory reality and absurdity of this era into a representational narrative with the help of a metaphorical view. His recent works are obviously distinct from his previous. The theme of ‘Flying Roosters’ is intended to incorporate a sense of wit and satire with regard to societal issues like the ongoing economic recession and the increasing gap between the rich and the poor. Seong’s painting draws our attention to our cacophonous reality through his ideal imaginations rather than through representational depictions. In this context, Seong seems to believe in the healing power of art. A slight smile emerges on our faces while taking a look at Seong’s painting, which may lead to an undeniable self inquiry about where we are headed. This is true even when we end up with a type of fruitless artistic commotion.

Plum blossoms, to Seong, I suppose, serves as a spirit of self-reliance and a dedication to the wretched people under the bombardment. A sense of humor in art and unrealistic depiction of subjects that characterizes his recent works can be understood as a sign of his artistic transformation attempting a new trial in terms of formal interpretations. The undeniably inseparable link between art and societal conditions gains more attention due to Seong’s symbolical significance of plum blossoms or roosters. In the midst of horrible cold, plum blossoms promise a new beginning of a new day as an omen of good fortune, like roosters as symbolical sign wishing for wealth and fame, both appeasing prevalent resentment of the time. Seong poses a question to those who sympathize with the ‘unrealistic outcry.’ What virtue does an artist need to have? We may take a look back on the end of last century when art should be for the sake of art. When art incorporates societal reality in a more positive way and operates as a critical mechanism, the healing function or purifying role in art can be expected within a societal context, and supported and buffeted by the conditions of the time. Seong poses a question again. Is it possible to apply an artistic perspective on humane conditions within painting? From where can humanity begin to be restored for the sake of people all around the world suffering from warfare or natural disasters? He stands here as an artist who helps to project an awareness of the inhumane conditions of our reality through Flying Roosters. Seong yearns to disclose another layer where roosters spread their wings in the air as Marc Chagall did in his painting, thus realizing a surreal landscape in which greenish scents from plum blossoms are diffused.
