Ae-ri : Love is Benecifial

Mental activity is very intimately related to the understanding of an object. Particularly in visual art, it is within bounds to say that the object is everything, aside from the subject that paints the painting. First of all, the object affects our consciousness. Thus, things that are perceived become the objects. What we can see is what we can perceive, and the perception is naturally led to a mental experience. This mental experience makes the rules that can analyze and define the objects. This way, the object becomes the medium of mental activity. Thoughts and emotions that reside in us are also nonmaterial objects. In summary, visual art is an inner relationship between the subject and the object, and also the medium of a mental activity. Seong Tae-Hun’s objects, which satirize the irrationality of modern society by depicting combat planes flying around the Four Gracious Plants, and express hope in life with a flying chicken in paintings, always have multiple meanings. In an instant the objects may seem irrelevant, but the underlying meanings create another story. Therefore, Seong Tae-Hun’s objects are metaphorical and symbolic. Furthermore, they are articulate.

.‘Ae-ri’ is the object the artist paints. She is a clearly objectified person. In most cases when a person is objectified, it is because the person has distinctive characteristics. Before the development of cameras, it was portraits that were used to record a historic figure. In addition, with contents that concern religions or people included in old books and Confucian classics, portrait paintings were a main genre in traditional painting along with landscape painting. Seong Tae-Hun’s portraits may feel unusual since he originally painted traditional paintings with a modern sentiment mostly, however the reason that the artist, who concerns himself with the modern era focused on a person herself could have been to convey the artists primitive, essential sentiments

Ink-and-wash painting is a genre that requires endless training and cultivation. The concentration of the ink, the rhythm and the strength end and begin the moment the ink, water, and Korean paper meet. Controlling that instant is only up to the artist’s elaboration. There is no going back in ink-and-wash painting. One stroke should reveal the artist’s soul and stories. In ink-and-wash painting, you begin painting the moment you lift your brush. Seong Tae-Hun painted ‘Ae-ri’ this way, in the ink-and-wash method.

Ae-ri, who once dreamed of becoming an artist, had to be an ordinary office worker due to various situations. However, she is a soon to be artist who recently started to paint again. By looking at ‘Ae-ri’, Seong Tae-Hun started to draw her in a swift, single stroke, contemplating about what it is like to be an artist. Literally, the ink-and-wash portrait is created by Seong Tae-Hun’s aura. Instead of focusing on the person itself, Seong Tae-Hun’s portrait focuses more on the person’s thoughts and daily life. Looking at ‘Ae-ri,’ who approaches painting more freely and daringly than a full-time artist, the artist reconsiders what it is like to live as an artist. Thus it seems that the artist is expressing his mind in ink-and-wash painting by reflecting his feelings onto ‘Ae-ri’.

In Seong Tae-Hun’s portrait, ‘Ae-ri’ is not depicted clearly. However her emotions are clearly visible. Whether they are hers or his is hard to tell because they are oddly mixed. She didn’t pose to model for a painting, but she is depicted bluntly, and candidly as she appears in daily life. Depending on the elaboration of an artist, ink-and-wash paintings can be expressed with incredible depth and density. Seong Tae-Hun’s ink-and-wash painting is as colorful as a colored painting. That could be the reason ‘Ae-ri’s facial expression can be read in numerous different ways, even though it looks simple. Contemplation like “what is she thinking?”, or “am I living my daily life like her?” starts to occur. A chance to vaguely reflect on myself. Then I find free ‘Ae-ri’, within myself.
