Painting of Seong Taehun: The Lost Dream and the Process of Humanization

Lee Jin-myeong / Art critic, Specialist in Aesthetics and Oriental Studies

Seong Taehun (1968- ) painted not only history but also society. He did not simply reproduce historical events on the canvas, but intended to figure out the meaning of a specific time. In the end, he even began to ask about the essence of the human history. As time went by, he also started to ask about the significance of human beings. The artist learned philosophy because he thought that the meaning of human beings cannot be understood by the mere incident of holding paintbrushes while treading the ground. By inquiring into <The Book of Rites> or <Liji>, he saw the systems of humans. Through <The Four Books> or <Sishu>, he saw the mind of humans. By approaching <The Records of the Grand Historian> or <Shiji>, he gained an insight into the events of humans. Thus, the artist was aware that the path of humans is an incessant effort moving from Qing qi xing (情其性) to Xing qi qing (性其情). Qing qi xing (情其性) refers to the state where learning as desire acquired in the stream of life brutally suppresses the nature as goodness. On the contrary, Xing qi qing (性其情) is the state where the good nature is recovered to overcome the emotion of desire in a highly relaxed manner. The path of humans is commonly called “Tao ().” This Tao consists in the recovery of the good nature. After one recovers the good nature, what should one do next? In a small unit, one is required to keep the domestic affairs in order. Furthermore, one must be helpful to the community. The vitality full of vivacity in the community contributes to smooth operation of the country making the whole world happy. This way, the dream of “Yu min tong le (與民同樂)”or “sharing joy with the people”comes true. For this reason, the sage who is conscious of the moral duty will never abandon the duty assigned for the state affairs. However, capitalism, which urges people to continuously increase desire and thoroughly denies the value inherited from forefathers, as well as the excess of late capitalism with an enhanced desperate aspect instigated saying that recovery of nature is nothing but a fabrication or a delusion. Like this, we were brainwashed as the way such codes were pressing us until transforming us into their slaves. Originally, we wanted to live in the perfect whole, sharing all of our good natures and depending on one another to complement the deficiency. Sometimes we could achieve the perfect whole and, at other times, we reached the nearly the same level.

Seong Taehun has been painting the series“Fly, Roosters”since 2012. The artist states that he had a tremendously heartfelt awakening when he first saw the rooster that was being raised in a rural workshop on the outskirts of Gyeonggi-do. In particular, the artist was interested in the rooster among many others living in the cage. In terms of etymology, “roost” meaning rooster refers to“a perch” or“to rest.”Roosters have forgotten the days of hunting and raising their young while flying and moving throughout vast areas with freedom. Now they feel comfortable resting on the perches of the cage, and they are even proud of their position of handling or dealing with many hens. On the canvas, the artist dramatizes the nature of roosters, in other words, their capacity of flying, and their desire, that is, the currently enjoyed comfortable settlement. The series “Fly, Roosters”went into orbit in earnest in terms of completion of forms since 2016 after having undergone many experiments. A canvas painted with lacquer was able to dramatically portray a pitch-black dark night or early dawn. In addition, it served to reveal material characteristics of the burned wood. For this reason, the words from the “Fly, Roosters” series can be interpreted as follows:“Remember how to fly in a world on fire without being burned to death.”or“Fly and leave at dawn before midday, when other people are with the hustle and bustle (Be the first to realize before others).”

The Buddhist Scriptures, <The Lotus Sutra> or <Fa Hua Jing> includes an expression saying "The Three Worlds lack comfort, so the worlds can be compared to a burning house." A burning house is a house on fire. The Three Worlds refer to the World of Desire, the World of Form, and the World of Formlessness. Here, the World of Desire means chaos or bedlam, while the World of Form signifies a place where those who cultivated mental training resulting in a calm and luminous mind live. However, it also includes the World of Formlessness, which is a synonym of the non-corporeal realm, that is, a world of mental contemplation free from the bondage of physical and material presence. It is understandable that the house on fire refers to hell, evil spirit, animals. beasts, bedlam, humans and the six celestial bodies of desire. However, it is surprising to see that the World of Form and the World of Formlessness are also included in the house on fire. This can be translated that even a life that achieves mental satisfaction fails to get out of the house on fire in case one’s life stagnates in pursuit of personal satisfaction only. The scene where the ground burns and the sky turns red depicted by Seong Taehun is reminiscent of a house on fire. The main character, a rooster is struggling to jump over the burning house and flies up in the sky. The rooster is our self-portrait.

The term “humanization”includes the domestication of animals and plants carried out by humans, but it also involves the concept of “civilization” of humans by humans. However, the human domestication, that is, civilization, is different from cultivation. Civilization is related to the adaptation of humans to external institutions. On the other hand, cultivation is associated with the restoration of the indwelt nature. Humanization of animals and plants means elimination of their nature for the sake of human desires. In this context, civilization, which means the humanization towards humans signifies the removal of human nature for the sake of human desires. Let’s suppose that the most extreme manifestation of civilization is late capitalism. This is a byword for“a house on fire mentioned in <The Lotus Sutra> or <Fa Hua Jing>. It measures the world in a quantitative manner only to lock people in it. It oppresses, distorts, exploits, and conquers the external environment. The more the level intensifies, the deeper the inner goodness is hidden in darkness to look for an escape. The allegory of the roosters that Seong Taehun painted in earnest is the very story about how we are.

The leitmotif that Seong Taehun brought to us this year, in 2020 is“Smiling plum blossoms.”Three or four red cats are playing on the roof. Red plum blossoms reach the roof enjoying its full bloom. Sometimes sparrows appear as if to give a pleasant sound. The canvas evokes a synesthetic mood harmonized with the friendly movements of happy cats, the sounds of birds, and the fragrance of plum blossoms. The artist focuses on the roof scenes on purpose. The roof is the exterior part of a building. Portraying only the roof means complete exclusion of the interior part of a building, Inside means the inner world of a person. The exterior of a building, as the roof in this painting, means human socialization and systems. In this scene, the cats symbolize an independent and egocentric condition. The artist portrayed an independent and undisturbed self as a cat playing leisurely while adapting to the extreme exterior called late capitalism. However, this series is entitled“Smiling plum blossoms.”The work“Smiling plum blossoms” is a symbol of hope. The fragrance of plum blossoms is a metaphor for mentality that will diminish the bad smell of desire, selfishness, jealousy, narcissism, and sadism that flows as decomposed water by the drains of the unconscious. For this reason, Sangchon Shin-heum (1566-1628), a literary liege in the mid-Joseon Dynasty wrote a poem as follows:

Even after a thousand years, a paulownia tree constantly keeps its tune,

Plum blossoms refuse to sell their fragrance

even when going through harsh cold throughout their life.

Even if the moon changes its aspect a thousand times, it never lose its essence,

Even if a willow is cut a hundred times, it will continue to sprout new branches.

The plum blossoms illustrated by Seong Taehun are equivalent to plum blossoms metaphorized by Shin Heum. Hope comes from will. It is the firm bone of will that does not care about the flesh of the emotions. A paulownia tree has thousand-year tunes, and plum blossoms do not intend to break their will either. Even though the moon seems to change all the time, it never changes. At the same time, willows do not lose their strong vitality. The same way the five virtues of benevolence, righteousness, courtesy, wisdom and trustworthiness belong to one word, “benevolence,” the Four Gracious Plants (plum blossoms, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo) described by Shin Heum are included in a single dimension of <Smiling plum blossoms> of Seong Taehun. Therefore, <Smiling plum blossoms> are another name for hope. Red cats symbolize the current conditions where we are in, In other words, they refer to late capitalism, scientism, mammonism and competitivism (competition-oriented mindset). In sum, they are the present evil. However, this will not be an invincible fortress that persists forever. Evil can open its mind to the most trivial and simple things. Fragrance of plum blossoms is one of them. The allegory of cats playing surrounded by evil and a flying rooster before a house burns ultimately teaches the process of finding the original self by remembering the fragrance of plum blossoms. The word“Wu Sang Wo” is also found in“Qi Wu Lun”of <Zhuangzi>. The expressions such as“I abandon myself (self-abandonment)”and“I bury myself (self-burial)”have great implications to people living today. My self“(Wo)”strongly influenced by learning (exercise) acquired throughout the stages of life is far from the original self“Wu ().”My self“(Wo)”is a red cat. “Wu ().”is my existence trying to reach the essence encouraged by the fragrance of plum blossoms. Therefore, <Smiling plum blossoms> of Seong Taehun condenses a simple yet grand narrative, on a single canvas, that tries to recover“the lost me”and lost dreams. It is my belief that there will be a heart-touching resonance inside of us as well, as long as we intuit this meaning through our eyes.
