(Life is tragedy when seen in close-up but a commedy in long-shot.)”

A hybrid waltz of tradition and modernity, a boat heading toward the world of Flower Garland

Kenshu Li / Art critic

In the process of development of modern Korean painting, Seong Taehun can be considered a central generation leading “Nouvelle Vague of Korean painting” and “fusion Oriental painting” that intend to seek and experiment a new form of Korean painting. In the midst of rapid industrialization, urbanization, and westernization, Korean painting, which was taking a stationary posture counting on traditional materials and techniques, had to search for a new way out. From the early and mid-1980s. experiments to overcome the material limitations focused on paper, brush, and ink began to appear.

It was not just about overcoming material limitations. The language of the people as well as pop-oriented colors that go beyond the lofty and abstruse tendency of ink wash painting (Sumukhwa) that reveres the spirit of ink wash began to appear on Hwaseonji (mulberry paper). The tradition of ink wash literati painting maintained its monotonousness while the voice of intense colors such as folk paintings (Minhwa) and murals was a sufficient element to prelude a “revolution from the lower group” in Korean painting. The confrontation in the 1980s between Minjung art and formalist art led to competition in terms of theory and practice, achieving modernization of Korean art in each genre. In any case, a new gust of wind blew in Korean painting, which took a path in a different direction from the previous one.

In the 1990s, along the accelerated hybridization among genres, the dissolution of boundaries, and the post-rigorism of painting, Korean painting expanded its limits and scopes at least, if it is not about notable depth, and underwent diversification in new waves and winds. The democratization of Korean painting has widely spread to such an extent that it was believed that the status of ink wash painting and color painting were simply reversed. Seong Taehun started his painting work in earnest in the middle of this new trend movement. Having already acquired the basics of traditional painting since high school days, the important mission for him was to find a way to express his point of view in a modern way. Thus, he recognized the importance of communicating expressive language or themes through the language pattern of our times while balancing with tradition at the same time.

By juxtaposing disparate iconography in probable conditions, he made possible metaphorical and symbolic speech (articulation), instead of intervening historical awareness and awareness of the times into the canvas in the indicative mood of Minjung art.  Although he starts with traditional motifs such as the Four Gracious Plants (plum, orchid, chrysanthemum and bamboo) and landscape, he transforms them into new Four Gracious Plants and new landscape paintings of our time, by arranging his unique reflections on the times and historical experiences at important points.

Since the artist had already gone through a powerful whirlwind of metadiscourse in the 1980s, he was able to accept the era of small discourse expressing individual private feelings and trivial daily life in the 1990s. Entering the 2000s, Seong Taehun focused on traditional strokes of ink wash painting, but he sometimes applied a sort of image technique that overlaps huge landscape images with quotidian and realistic scenery, by exquisitely using the advantage of ink wash painting that erases the ink while overlying it. The effective way of expressing the traces of memories that are mingled in space and time is literally excellent since it is hardly observable in other painting genres.

The fusion of the metadiscourse and the small discourse in terms of materials and themes leads to a sort of eclecticism. In addition, through the intervention of rapidly changing events and themes that impedes the strokes of ink wash painting that intends to move toward banality, the screen slowly takes some unfamiliar aspects while acquiring meaningful novelty. During this period, pointillism frequently appears together with this method. The numerous dots mainly found on the background stay as the meaning of control or condensation of a certain emotion or an accumulation of memories that refuse to remain as a simple blank screen, fusing with the thematic image through while contributing to elevating unique emotions unique to the screen.

At first glance, Seong Taehun's screen is perceived as a tradition-based ink wash painting. However, looking at it closely, as the event character of another context intervenes due to the intermittently inserted modern icons, the screen generates slight incongruity and conflict between traditional elements and modern ones. The collision of these disparate times and events gives vitality full of tension to the entirely quiet screen, creating a moment of contact where tradition reconciles with modernity. It is probably a place where the old future and the new past intersect.

The work representing the first half is considered <Ask where the way is I> (2006). He transformed the typical scenery painting (Sansuhwa) with a heavy atmosphere into a landscape painting imbued with the stories of our times, by placing heterogeneous contexts and events with different times and spaces such as a cool waterfall flows in the scenery created by the ruins of concrete showing the disaster of the war, a stone bridge, soldiers who went into operations in the Gulf War, people climbing the mountain, those who take pictures, people playing hwatu (cards), a man masturbating in the corner and combat helicopters roaming around the sky.

The metaphorical combination of time and space in the first half is later developed into the series <Fly, Roosters> (2009), which began to create an unrealistic and fictional landscape by confronting the soar of beings unable to fly with the plum blossom, a symbol of lofty constancy. This can be considered a kind of accusation of the current conditions that reflects a satire of the absurd reality perceived in the gap and distance between ideal and reality.

Since then, the series <Fly, Roosters> has also been expressed by the technique of lacquer painting. However, as the Oriental color and atmosphere grew intenser, he started to focus more on the chromatic effect and depth naturally created by lacquer than on the thematic consciousness. In recent years, it has even developed into a folk painting (Minhwa) of our time with a more popular image, continuing with <Smiling plum blossom> (2022), in which rainbow-colored flowers bloom. The series <Fly, Roosters> served as an opportunity for Seong Taehun to seek Korean painting on the whole, from ink wash painting to color painting, even trying the profound colors of lacquer painting. At the same, it was the moment when the confrontational basis and reason for being between ink wash painting and color painting collapsed within the artist himself. When immersed in the traditional techniques and mind of ink wash painting, it is inevitable that ink wash painting has limitations that can only remain as non-historical idealism and expressionism depicting private psychology. By adding narrative elements that can arouse the consensus of the times to the screen, Seong Taehun evokes popular familiarity found in folk paintings and murals.

With traditional forms and techniques, Seong Taehun has been unceasingly seeking the modernization and popularization of Korean painting by embracing modern content and themes. Recently, he created <Seonyudo Waltz> (2022), a masterpiece that can be evaluated as a work that has made another great leap in terms of materials, subject matter and themes. Even though it was painted with acrylics, this painting presents the strong feel of the standards and coloring rules of Oriental painting. In sum, this is a monumental work of his painting energy and passion, which synthesizes his artistic world over a total of six years from planning to production.

Our old paintings have many paintings with boating scenes. Seonyudo is a small island next to Yanghwa Bridge, where the immortals were enjoying a leisurely life. A huge boat named “Seonyudo Park” is sailing toward the westward sea. It is a modern version of the “Banya Yongseondo,” which portrays a boat heading from this world to the paradise of Nirvana, while relying on prajna, which is the incomparably perfect wisdom full of bright insight into all things and principles in Buddhist art.

Seong Taehun states, “With the motif of my life journey, such as graduation from university, hospitalization due to a car accident, marriage, childbirth, passing of my parents, winning the Keep Working Fund Award, work activities, sponsors and people who helped me, I expressed joys and sorrows of humans in the form of a waltz. I also depicted our country's milestones of modern history (liberation, Korean War, April Revolution, Democratic Struggle of June 10, Democratization movement of May 18) and the tense situation caused by the division of two Koreas through combat helicopters and armored vehicles.”

This painting with the feel of the festiveness of a waltz in which personal history and modern history are dancing intertwined with each other includes some hidden parts that cannot be explained by the optimistic spirit of the song <Ah! Our country, Korea!> that sings about "A place where beautiful clouds float in the sky, a cruise ship, in the river, and the happiness that everyone deserves is always replete with freedom.” Advertising balloons floating in the sky, dolphins jumping around the ship, large fountains soaring into the sky, an amphibian car following the ship, and combat helicopters that seem to be monitoring from the sky… they are threatening elements able to destroy the happiness on board at any time, creating a furtive sense of uneasiness. The cottonwood tree reminiscent of a big sail may not be romantic scene in a children's song, but a dark symbol reminding us of the Korean axe murder incident at Panmunjeom.

Although the screens of Seong Taehun are interpreted as peaceful landscapes of our commonplace daily lives, traces of the serious metadiscourse such as the horrors of war and revolutionary events are hidden within. The same way we can find, in David Lynch's films, madness hidden in everyday life and the ugly faces permeated in the name of beauty, his paintings show the absurd phenomena embraced in the times and history, daily life and reality, even though the degree is not as extreme as the American filmmaker’s. Therefore, in this peaceful panorama, we also see the artist's critical gaze on reality, while sympathizing with what Chaplin says, "Life is tragedy when seen in close-up but a comedy in long-shot,” we catch sight of the ironic landscape of everyday life where anxiety and happiness intersect.

We can find the compositional similarity sensed in the festiveness of <Seonyudo Waltz> in <Girosoryeongyedo> (1804) of Kim Hongdo. In this painting, which depicts a gathering to celebrate the 60th birthday held at Manwoldae under Mt. Songaksan, we can see the interesting portrayal of a long epilogue on the canvas, the scene of Mt. Songaksan painted by the techniques unique to the artist, the scenery of a feast spread out like a yard below it, and the appearance of a large group of people around the area. There are as many as 300 characters appearing on a single painting. From a panoramic view, a party is going on, but the characters with their own episodes at every corner have their respective independent voice, creating an effect heard from the chords of an orchestra. This is the very festiveness and cannibalism felt from the painting of Kim Hongdo.

A carnival is not a spectacle in which spectators are separated from participants, but a cheerful event in which everyone takes part for full enjoyment. What makes this cannibalism possible is the polyphonic structure. We find the epitome of the intrinsic Korean beauty through the harmony of this comprehensive carnival where each character plays a role while leading each small theme. No matter which part of the painting is cut out and enlarged, it is fairly complete as an independent painting. It precisely shows the universal aesthetic characteristics consistent with the “unity and harmony of diversity” argued by the classical aesthetic theory of the West. It is indisputably making a smile of a polyphonic chord. Through <Seonyudo Waltz> of Seong Taehun, we can equally find the achievement of Kim Hongdo, who harmoniously put landscape painting, genre painting, and documentary painting in a single canvas.

In the crisis of Korean painting, the issue which is constantly discussed, we must pay attention to the continuous efforts and trials of Seong Taehun to express the spirit of the times (Zeitgeist) while keeping the expression method of brush and ink and consider reevaluation that deserves. From the paintings of classical scholars to the ones of the people, Seong Taehun never gives up the historical awareness and dreams of utopian landscapes where tradition and modernity, history and future, and nature and humans dance united as one. By the time the boat heading for the westward realm finally arrives at the shore, I am already curious about how the artist wants to surprise us showing what kind of true landscape, from which era, etc.
