Trauma, Healing and Flying with Embracing Trauma
[By Kho, Chung-Hwan]

Historical Site (1999-2003), Reflections from the Wall (2004-2005), Asking Where to Go (2006-2007), Plum Blossoms Do Not Give Away Their Scent, despite the Coldness of Life (2008), and Flying Roosters (2009). This is a listing of Seong Tae-hun’s history in painting thematically and chronologically. It is noticeable that history serves as a metaphor for time, walls as ideology and roads as life. This series of metaphors tell us that Seong’s painting is focused on existential conditions which are generally applicable to human beings as well as realistic awareness of the here and now. You may feel hard-pressed to find pure and abstract ideology in these paintings, something which is typical in traditional Korean painting. It is, however replaced with poignant historical awareness.

Strictly speaking, the ideological utopia as legacy of traditional painting turns into a vision of the here and now in relation to zeitgeist. Our traditional legacy is newly dressed as a contemporary issue. As such, even though Seong firmly follows rules of Korean painting as a genre, he is unusually skillful in dealing with a cacophony of visual elements which collide with one another due to his depictions of current issues, thereby bringing a sense of intimacy and dramatic tension to the picture. The series of Historical Site is concerned with exploration and documentation of sites which are bereaved of Korean political history, revealing Seong’s tendency to combine the notion of the site-specific and his historical awareness

Seong stated that the wall serves as a metaphor for ideology. It can be either ideological or virtual images within his mind, or stark white canvas itself. In this context, the wall means both empty canvas which every artist should confront and a certain latent world that can be developed on the canvas (Martin Heidegger compares art to acts showing a certain world which will finally take place through it). More specifically, it stands for political division of the north and the south in Korea, and subsequently a derived invisible ideological wall among people (like the left vs. the right, and the progressive vs. the conservative) furthermore, it stands for the impossibility of communication which alienates one another. Lastly, it incorporates the concept of actual walls, here the wall is related to the everyday.

‘Wall of thoughts’ is a saying that reflects what happens when taking a look at a wall, you may experience that all kinds of thoughts arise. Walls are a type of canvas for thoughts or bringing up thoughts. Leonardo Da Vinci said that he saw not only natural landscape but incidental happenings such as floods or warfare from an empty wall. The poet Baek Seok said he felt irresistible longings for a lost country and birth place when looking at a wall (or screen paper) in a foreign land. Then what does Seong see on an empty wall? Walls in his paintings are often shown in our everyday life as parts of bathrooms covered with tiles, from these walls the artist sees scenes from history, warfare, pandemonium similar to warfare(such as collapses of reconstruction sites or Sampoong department store, and terror scenes) and the scars followed by them. What brought the scars passed but the scars remain in the present. As such, what happened in the past is brought up to the present and to life again. The present overlaps the past, and builds onto the past rather than representing the present itself. Therefore, the present is far from running away from the past.

A little girl, symbol of the next generation, gazes vacantly. It is not desirable to pass on these scars to the next generation. This is the reason why Seong turns on a faucet and washes the scars. This is the way history runs through, warfare runs through, and life which is not unlike warfare runs through. However, can the scars be removed while she is playing with water falling from the faucet into the basin? Seong utilizes irony through the comparison between scars from warfare and dabbling in the water.

The ironical expression was intensified and diversified with the theme of Asking Where to Go. The theme hides a type of negative perspective which says that we are already lost. This theme is concerned with loss of identity and what is hidden beneath it. From that time, helicopters, Apache helicopters and fighters appeared. The fully armed fighters are flying over our mundane everyday life, such as people trekking on mountains, plants embedded in pots, and plum blossoms in full bloom. They don't seem to know that fighters are flying over their heads, or seem not to care at all. In this context, Seong tries a type of unfamiliarization. They take routines in life for granted and never doubt how dangerous they can be. Despite rampantly occurring terror, violence, lynching, and numerous unimaginable events, they are indifferent and seem to think they occur somewhere else. Seong draws attention to the fact that these seemingly perfect routines are far from it.

Seong derived his idea for fighters from horseflies and mosquitoes. As it is already known, horseflies and mosquitoes are bugs which live by sucking blood from people and livestock. Harmful as it may be to people and livestock, it is somewhat understandable physiology of their own. When it is a metaphor for impudent blood-sucking people like vampire, it is a different issue. Economic logics supporting post-colonialism, colonial imperialism, cosmopolitanism, neoliberalism, globalization (hiding marketing strategies for the entire world), commodity fetishism of capitalism and multinational corporations divide the entire world into hosts and parasites. The artist depicts this stark and absurd reality. We were sucked by someone out of ourselves, or we may have sucked someone else out. By now, the helicopters flying carelessly over mundane routines, their heads, the plants and plum blossoms should never be taken carelessly.

Plum Blossoms Do Not Give Away Their Scent, despite the Coldness of Life. Plum blossoms can emit such a strong scent in the spring because they didn’t lose their scent in spite of extremely harsh coldness in winter. They symbolize integrity and fidelity of Korean gentlemen who wait for the right chance in a troubled era until the time ripens. As such they are qualified enough to be a standard of mindset for artists. No matter how severely cold winter is, spring shall come; no matter how harsh reality gets, better times shall come. Or the better times may not come and in actuality whether they come or not do not matter. Faith itself may serve as a condition which makes us what we are (According to existentialism, human beings are neither born not found but made in process). Once plum blossoms are in full bloom, their scent never dies away despite disturbances like noises from surrounding bugs. Rather the scent spreads further through the fuss they make.

Plum blossoms are said to be in bloom at first in the spring. It makes them considered to be heralds of spring. Roosters appearing in his latest work are heralds of dawn. For this reason, plum blossoms and roosters share something in common as heralds for spring and dawn respectively. As the flowers brood winter, roosters swallow night. There are neither plum blossoms which never pass through winters, nor roosters which never pass through nights. Springs are much warmer through plum blossoms, and dawns are much more radiant through darkness. This is the way the artist plants seeds of hope on historical sites, scars from warfare, and ruins of life. Seong dealt with trauma in previous paintings and now shows us how to embrace it.

This method gets expanded through a certain kind of surrealistic and nonrealistic situational contingency. In other words, it is the case with green-colored plum blossoms and soaring roosters up in the sky. Even chicks are flying in his paintings. They may not be everything he wanted to depict. Seong may have envisioned flying homeless people, flying beggars, flying drunkards, flying people who want to get solace and dead pigs which were buried alive. This implausible fact as a utopian representation leads hopes more like hopes and dreams more like dreams. But for dreaming, how can we hang onto this harsh reality of life which is unlike that of warfare? Friedrich Nietzsche stated that life can’t be justified with anything but aesthetics. Leaping into dreams rather than running away into dreams, supplementing and repairing reality with the help of fiction, and reconstructing reality based on fiction to finally replacing the former with the latter is what only art can make happen.
