Another Word for Utopia:

An exhibition by Seong Tae-hun

                                                                                                                                                                                                         Hong Gyeong-han (art critic)

Seong Tae-hun is well-known as a natural lacquer painting artist. Flying Roosters is Seongs main body of work. The series began from the fluttering of wild roosters that have lived in a natural state. However, his roosters are not flightless birds. Full of energy, they rise up into the air. This degenerated bird which can be seen to go through different stages such as chick, rooster, and phoenix has a dynamic power with which it can soar up whenever it is ready. And just as crucially, it is as free as any other bird can be.

This fascination with roosters was not so visible in Seongs early paintings. In the early 2000, Seongs work was much closer to authentic traditional Korean painting. Using light touches of color on Korean paper, the artist depicted real scenery or playful kids in peaceful everyday situations. Sometimes he painted metaphors for history and the concept of zeitgeist by placing fighter planes besides waning plants. As an artist who never turned his back on reality despite undergoing periods of great hardship, he worked to incorporate site-specific qualities and social critique within his work.

By 2010 Seongs work had changed. Whilst playfully chasing the roosters that were being raised in the front yard of his studio, he noticed them fluttering their wings, and this stuck in his head as the initial point of the series. In regard to this, the artist stated in an interview that I noticed that roosters could fly to a specific spot when a certain situation came up.

In his eyes the flapping of the roosters represented a type of ideal. It was a substitute for the bodily gesture representing the beautiful and peaceful world that Seong was dreaming of.  In other words, it was a portrayal of woeful people who never cease in their hard work, marching towards the present, but unfortunately never getting the rewards for their hardships, but instead reaching something closer to desperation and mournfulness.

By replacing the absurdity of life and reality with the portrayal of events that are so unrealistic that they are unlikely to happen, Flying Roosters is embedded with a message that asks the viewer never to give up, despite the seeming absence of hope, to never throw away the inevitable yearning to fly above it all. In particular, the flying roosters that pass through darkness are visual embodiments of the ideals and hopes that insignificant people like ourselves cant help but hold onto, serving as a suggestion of utopia, looking for a world worthy of living in, by overcoming pain, agony, and adversity.

Seongs work began to assure more solidity after the traditional lacquer application was applied. For a start, unlike the shallow qualities of chemical pigments, the work began to attain a high quality luster, as well as increased endurance. Furthermore, the understated yet profound colors, the unique ambience, and sense of depth, were incomparable to that of any other materials. In truth, Seongs Korean lacquer painting is characteristic of its laboriousness and the complexity of the working process, as well as the high cost of the materials. However it has a number of other strong merits that differentiate it from oil painting, acrylic painting, and Korean painting. Among them is the unique beauty that comes from the characteristics of the materials, and the innumerably coverings of multiple layers of natural lacquer, which makes the resultant work produce such a sense of nobility. This is the reason why his work can maintain its own deep and profound allure a vague sense of heaviness despite some elements of humor present in his depictions.

With its warm and thoughtful message for his community, along with the projection of his own life spent overcoming times of perseverance, Seongs work is fulfilled as much by its contents as it is by its materials. That is to say, Seongs Korean lacquer painting seems more significant because he achieved it whilst enduring the pain that came from a great deal of suffering.
