The Abundance of Daily Lives, Portrayed in Ink-and-Wash Paintings Seong Tae-Hun’s Solo Exhibition.

Lee, Sue (critic in aesthetics and art)

How could we define today’s Korean painting? Modern Korean paintings now need a new definition aside from the traditional one. Korean painting can be spotted intuitively within new artistic attempts, because of the unique medium, Hanji and Chinese ink, the light and shade of the ink, and methods of brushwork that it is based on. However, Korean painting does not only stand for the medium and uniqueness of techniques. Today's Korean painting has long been on a new stage, combining modern ideas and Western techniques. Regardless of the era or region, cultures become more original and colorful when they are intertwined. Likewise, in art, different techniques and movements were born each time foreign methods were absorbed. There are innumerable examples, such as Hellenistic Greek art, Gandhara art, Byzantine art, Renaissance art, and Impressionist painting. In addition, Korean painting itself could be modernized through combining the the cultural diversity of the present era on the basis of Korean painting.

Just as there is nothing in history that hasn’t changed to suit the era, Korean painting is developing too. One generation to another, Korea’s fine art has already evolved notwithstanding the distinction of Western and Eastern, and is now filled with new themes and techniques. Paintings that are referred to as Korean art are now formed as an artistic style, which shows artist’s individuality based on the intuitive characteristics of Korean paintings. Just as traditions renew at the moment the weight of the present reaches its limit, spirals of a person's life widen as experiences accumulate. Individual artists also broaden their horizons through the accumulation of various attempts, and so has the history of Seong's artworks.

Seong Tae-hun is an artist who portrays the life and spirit he pursues onto the traditions of Korean paintings. Until recently, he has symbolically expressed his desire to overcome limitations and to leap forward, through 'flying chickens.' The artist has portrayed our healthy spirit, which has overcome precarious situations in National, and personal history such as war and drastic change by painting the chicken unhurriedly flying. The artist's challenge, like the message contained in the work, led to a new interpretation of traditional techniques and materials. Until recently, the artist has recorded the process of the soaring of the spirit, which is symbolized as the chicken, through lacquer technique that has been used in daily lives for thousands of years. In this show, the artist has created a new style for telling his narrative by breaking out of the solid frame of lacquer painting which he has practiced over the years, and returning to the basic technique of Korean painting, ink-and-water.

Seong Tae-Hun’s eye takes a moment from the 'flying chickens’ and heads for painting portraits as he challenges himself with another change. The artist captures and depicts the natural moments of the people around him in a single, powerful brushstroke. The technique used in Seong's portrait series is a traditional Korean painting technique, but the subject and material do not remain in tradition. Generally, portraits in Korean paintings have been elaborated in detail in order to increase the level of vividness of the living subject, rather than using a technique in ink-and-wash or brush-using techniques. However, Seong Tae-Hun captures the momentary feeling of the character the artist has seen and represents that character by rough and gentle brushstrokes. For someone who has ever held a brush to paint, the speed of the brushstroke and the light and shade of the Chinese ink could make one recall the action of painting. The process of the fast brush slowing down, pausing and settling is transferred to the viewer’s body through their eyes. Thus, the physical sensation the brushstrokes gives has a delightfulness that is different from that of action painting’s. It conveys the speed of the brush line, and the sense of space of the paint spreading on the paper at the same time, therefore creating a new space-time within the painting.

As such, Seong's works reinterpreted Korean paintings, creating new styles of portrait. If the painting in the literary artist's style expressed the ideal through a speculative space called the blankness, folk paintings filled the surface with colors and forms to embody objects in everyday life or secular aspirations. Seong Tae-Hun’s portraits are filled with colors and forms like folk paintings, therefore it fully shows that the models are closely linked to actual life. ‘Ae-ri’ in particular, who is often portrayed in the artworks, is recreated as an individual, unique character within each painting. In addition, he records daily life by depicting the people in his life, such as his acquaintances and himself. The characters are in a comfortable state, looking at their cellphones, drawing, staring at someone, or lying sideways with their head in their hands, unaware of the artist's gaze. The people in the paintings who put a smile on viewers’ faces reveal the mischievous, and loving gazes of the artist. The artist expresses his feelings about everyday life, which sometimes feels languid and light through the subject matter, human figures.

Turning one’s eyes to the objects one is accustomed to is a common practice when trying out a new technique. Amongst them, portraits, are a good subject matter to practice one’s technique. Various portraits including <Mona Lisa>, which fully shows the Sfumato technique of Da Vinci, Van Gogh’s portraits and self portraits, and Matisse’s portrait of his wife, which he created a stir with by drawing a green line on her nose, face the artist’s challenge directly. Close acquaintances do not get angry even though the way they are represented is not exact or a little humorous. Therefore, there is no doubt that the models Seong portrayed in his pieces trust and respect him. We should keep our eyes peeled for what the artist will paint from now on with the ink-and-wash technique he rediscovered through painting portraits. Perhaps, limiting the artist’s attempt in the frame of ink-and-wash painting might be injurious. To Seong Tae-Hun, ink-and-wash painting is just one of the methods he is the best at when it comes to expression, not a purpose.

Modern art freely navigates the ocean of vast themes and techniques. Keeping up with concepts such as cultural identity and the autonomy of genres in a time the Internet unfolded the supranational information network could also be outdated. Seong Tae-Hun’s artworks show a point in the history of Korean painting, while showing how it can be interpreted modernly. Above all, it is also a product of the personal history of the artist himself. Therefore, the extraneous explanation of the works ends within this article, and I hope that the viewers enjoy Seong’s delightful art itself.
